A DVT machine, also known as an intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) device, is a medical device used to help prevent Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) — which is when blood clots form in deep veins, often in the legs. These machines are commonly used in hospitals for patients who are bedridden, post-surgery, or otherwise immobile for long periods.
How it works:
- The machine consists of inflatable sleeves or cuffs that wrap around your legs (sometimes feet or arms).
- It pumps air into the sleeves in cycles, gently squeezing and releasing the limbs.
- This mimics the natural muscle contractions of walking, helping promote blood flow and reduce the risk of clotting.
Common uses:
- After surgery (like orthopedic or abdominal surgery)
- During long hospital stays
- For patients with limited mobility or high risk of clotting
- Sometimes for home use under medical supervision
Types:
- Sequential Compression Devices (SCDs) – more advanced, inflate different parts of the leg in sequence.
- Foot compression pumps – target just the foot.
- Portable DVT machines – for home or travel use.
